The Role

As we gear up for Vintage 2025, we’re seeking an Vintage Assistant Winemaker to join our vintage team at our Gisborne winery –

  • Assist our winemaking team in all stages of our harvest winemaking production
  • Support winery operations across day or night shifts
  • Collaborate with operational teams to execute winery production plans that achieve against Winery Harvest KPIs
  • Contribute to the stylistic direction of the wines with involvement in blending decisions and tasting trials
  • Participate in blend, fining and ferment tasting as required
  • Be actively involved in juice and ferment monitoring
  • Assist with cross-functional communication with our Winemaking, Lab, and Cellar teams to ensure our quality standards are achieved
  • Operate and lead others with a safety-first focus in all tasks and undertakings
  • Front end coordination for fruit receival as required

The Gisborne Winery is steeped in history and helped build the New Zealand wine industry. The years of experience, experimentation, changes and research have made an indelible mark on New Zealand wine.

Enjoy varied exposure across different winemaking techniques and grapes; we produce sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot gris, pinot noir, rose and sparkling.

About You

  • At least two vintage experiences working in a winery
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Have a strong systems focus, working with our Winemakers and daily planner to assist in developing and updating cellar operations
  • Be a sound problem solver with the ability to do so under pressure
  • Be physically fit, reliable and a team player
  • Have safety at the forefront, living our Safety by Choice, not by Chance value

This is a full time, fixed term, seasonal role. Typically, our Vintage Assistant Winemakers in Gisborne will work from February to April. Because of the nature of our business, our vintage dates might change slightly, but we will always keep you up-to-date with the latest information as we get it.

What Else to Expect

  • Along with a great hourly rate, we have a number of additional benefits to add to your package!   
  • You’ll need to be available to work shifts of up to 10 hours, 6 days a week at vintage peak (Monday to Friday)
  • You need to be prepared (if required) to undertake a pre-employment medical examination and drug and alcohol test
